THE DANCE AT MARLEY - Patrick J. McCall 1861

Murtagh Murphy’s barn was full to the door, when eve grew dull,

For Phelim Moore his beautiful new pipes had brought to charm them;

In the kitchen thronged; the girls—cheeks of roses, teeth of pearls!

Admiring bows, and braids, and curls, till Phelim’s notes alarmed them.

Quick each maid her hat and shawl hung on dresser, bed, or wall,

Smoothed down her hair and smiled on all, as she the bawnoge* entered;

Where a shassf of straw was laid on a ladder, raised, that made

A seat for them, as still they stayed, while dancers by them cantered.

Murtagh and his Vanithee had tlieir chairs brought in to see

The heels and toes go fast and free, and fun and love and laughter;

In their sconces all alight shone the tallow candles bright—

The flames kept jigging all the night, upleaping to the rafter!

The pipes, with noisy, drumming sound, every lover’s whispering drowned,

So the couples took their ground;—their hearts within1 them, dancing!

Merrily, with toe and heel, airily in jig and reel,

Fast in and out they whirl and wheel, all capering and prancing.

“Off she Goes,” “The Rocky Road,” “The Tipsy House,” and “Miss M’Cloud,”

” The Devil’s Dream,” and ” Jig Polthogue,” ” The Wind that Shakes the Barley;”

” The First o’ May,” ” The Garran Buee,” ” Tatter Jack Walsh,” “The River Lee”—

As lapping breakers from the sea the myriad tunes at Marley!

Reels of three and reels of four, hornpipes and jigs galore,

With singles, doubles held the floor in turn, without a bar low;

But when fun and courting lulled, and the dancing somewhat dulled,

The door unhinged the boys down pulled, for ” Follow me up to Carlow.”

Ned and Nelly, hand in hand, footed in a square so grand,

Then back the jingling door they spanned, and swept swift as their glances.

Ned, indignant-like, retired, chased by Nell, until he tired,

And her constancy admired, that he soon made advances.

But young Nell would not be won, and a lover’s chase came on—

The maidens laughed to see the fun, till she surrendered fairly:

Hands enclasped in rosy pride, tripping neatly, side by side,

They turned and bowed most dignified to all the folk of Marley!

Poorly pen of sage or scribe could such scenes of joy describe,

Or due praises fair ascribe, where all were nearly equal!

The love-making I’ve forgot in each cozy saustagh* spot—

Yet now I think I’d better not go tell, but wait the sequel.

* Saustagh, comfortable.

Everything must have an end, and the girshas* homewards wend,

With guarding brother and a friend—this last was absent rarely!

Late the Mnrphys by the hearth talked about their evening’s mirth—

Ne’er a dance upon the earth could match their own at Marley!

MacPherson’s Farewell

The words are by Robert Burns and are based on the real Jamie MacPherson’s farewell which MacPherson wrote before the outlaw was hanged on November 16, 1700.

He reportedly played the tune at the scaffold. There is a myth that he destroyed the fiddle so that nobody else could ever play it again. The truth seems to be that he offerred his fiddle to anyone in the crowd. There were no takers, possibly from fear of being considered his friend, so he smashed the fiddle and threw the pieces at the crowd. Part of the story is that the local authorities, fearing the arrival of a reprieve, advanced the clock so as to speed up his execution.

The fiddle’s remains are in the MacPherson Clan museum at Newtonmore. The published versions of this tune vary widely, not surprisingly for a song air.

‘Twas on one bright March morning
I bid New Orleans adieu.
And I took the road to Jackson town,
my fortune to renew,
I cursed all foreign money,
no credit could I gain,
Which filled my heart with longing for
the lakes of Pontchartrain.

I stepped on board a railroad car,
beneath the morning sun,
I road the roads till evening,
and I laid me down again,
All strangers there no friends to me,
till a dark girl towards me came,
And I fell in love with a Creole girl,
by the lakes of Pontchartrain.

I said, “My pretty Creole girl,
my money here’s no good,
But if it weren’t for the alligators,
I’d sleep out in the wood”.
“You’re welcome here kind stranger,
our house is very plain.
But we never turn a stranger out,
From the lakes of Pontchartrain.”

She took me into her mammy’s house,
and treated me quite well,
The hair upon her shoulder
in jet black ringlets fell.
To try and paint her beauty,
I’m sure ‘twould be in vain,
So handsome was my Creole girl,
By the lakes of Pontchartrain.

I asked her if she’d marry me,
she said it could never be,
For she had got another,
and he was far at sea.
She said that she would wait for him
and true she would remain.
Till he returned for his Creole girl,
By the lakes of Pontchartrain.

So fare thee well my Creole girl,

But I’ll ne’er forget your kindness
in the cottage by the shore.
And at each social gathering
a flowing glass I’ll raise,
And I’ll drink a health to my Creole girl,
And the lakes of Pontchartrain.

This is another version (a variant) of the tune Lily of the WestThe Golden Encyclopedia of Folk Music states it was an “English street ballad about 100 years ago.”

According to Ready for the Storm, the album by Deanta, this is a “traditional Creole love song, which is commonly mistaken as being of Irish origin.”

It is also recorded on the Planxty album, Cold Blow and the Rainy Night. The information on that album states that the tune was probably brought back from British and French soldiers fighting in Louisiana and Canada in the War of 1812.

However, the origin of the tune, both geographically and chronologically is debated. The reference to railroad cars makes the 1812 date unlikely. Alternate titles include The Creole Girl, On the Lake of the Poncho Plains and Ponchartrain.

Ponchartrain Lakes are five miles north of New Orleans. According to Sam Henry the lakes “are a constant menace to New Orleans, their waters having to be kept away by great earthen dykes. The land there is so waterlogged that no celler can be built and all tombs are above ground.”*
